2013 Christmas Distribution is a Huge Success!!
Brunswick Family Assistance had a hugely successful Christmas Distribution Program, providing gifts and food for 2,619 individuals and food only for an additional 38 households. The distributions occurred from two locations: Shallotte (Brunswick Beacon Building) and Leland (Closer Walk Methodist Church). In Leland, we distributed to 28 households / 44 individual seniors (eligible persons over age 60) and 150 households with 702 children (12 and younger). On the same day, in Shallotte, we distributed gifts to 165 senior households (207 individuals) and on Thursday (December 19th) we distributed to 346 households with children (1520 individuals). We added a third day of distribution to accommodate an additional 57 approved households (123 Individuals) who participated in the Toys-for-Tots program. An added 38 households received food only.
BFA also did the vetting (approval) of 96 persons for the Brunswick County Toy Run. Busy time for Brunswick Family Assistance!! With all this activity, we continued to control our program participation and had to deny 1 households, primarily for seeking gifts from other programs.
There were many smiling faces for folks receiving gifts and food sufficient for a full Christmas dinner, including a turkey. With Santa Claus (John Manning) there to greet everyone, the children were especially excited (although they did not know what was in their big black backs). A highlight of the distribution was the 120+ bicycles we had donated, courtesy of the Brunswick Board of Realtors!! However, no smile was bigger, than the smile displayed by one senior who received his long desired gift…a three wheel bicycle!!
There are many folks to thank for the success of the program. ANYONE WHO ADOPTED A FAMILY OR CHILD IS AT THE HEART OF OUR GRATITUDE. However, the back of the Brunswick Beacon building was a wonderful distribution point, the Shallotte Police Department aided with traffic and security matters for all days. BFA volunteers, who contributed many hours either preparing for the event (doing intake to qualify recipients, setting up for the distribution), participating in the distribution, and the Marine Corps League, Toys-for-Tots.
